The websites below will aid you in your researching:
Ancestry.com The mother of all ancestry sites. In order to harness all of it's resources, you have to pay an annual fee. Of course, you can just go for the 14-day free trial ;) Even with a free (limited) membership, you are allowed to create your own GED / online family tree! You can also search through millions of individuals on pre-existing trees! I still use the old Ancestry Family Tree program they offered in 2001 - works great!
Rootsweb.com The daughter of all ancestry sites. This website actually was one of the first and best information gathering sites. As opposed to Ancestry, this is a totally free site. It is part of the Ancestry.com & MyFamily.com network...and they've created a HUMUNGUS message board. Great searches and links to other sites.
USGENWEB Even though Rootsweb is listed above, thought I'd give a direct link to this one. This page branches off to many census, marriage, tombstone and other areas of genealogy that can be extremely useful.
Social Security Death Index Yup...here's another part of Rootsweb. This is an extremely important and useful index. It contains all US Citizen death information from 1962 (in some cases before) to the present time!
Census Online All about the Census. Totally free, as far as I know. Also has some good links to other genealogy websites. It even has some Canadian census info. So, check it out you hoser.
Interment.net Excellent collection of cemetery info from around the US and the world! Key information can be found in epitaphs that point to other family members. Has proved very useful. Can search entire state for names. Definitely check this out. As of June, 2007 --> nearly 3.9 million names in nearly 8,400 cemeteries.
FamilySearch.org This great search tool is hosted by none other than the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Searches many records...you should definitely check this out. One of their best online tools are their Census Every-Name Index [For US/Canada/UK]. Very Very Nice.
Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness This site is absolutely wonderful. Simply go to the location in the US that you are searching for information. Volunteers are listed with a description of what they will look up for you (some for a fee). I requested a handful of items...most they were kind enough to do for free. I obtained death notices/obituaries within a week!
Civil War Searches Terrific site for searching for civil war information...especially battle info. They are continually transcribing information...massive amounts of documents. They have over 6.3 million civil war soldiers indexed. A must see for Civil War buffs.
Footnote.com After finding your civil war ancestor from the above resource, discover their CMSR (Compiled Military Service Record) without having to visit or order from National Archives in DC. Very cheap monthly subscription. They have dozens of other types of documents including Revolutionary War Rosters. I found a very obscure document on an ancestor here - 29 pages!
Ellis Island Records Search for individuals that passed through Ellis Island, coming to America. Records are held between 1892 and 1924 - over 22 million individuals. View actual ship manifests and vessel images! I found many of my ancestors there!
More Genealogy Resources On The Internet Great listing of resources on the WWW, mailing lists, newsgroups, email and more. Has links to government departments - If you ever need to order ANY vital stats from State or Counties, this is the site to research. Honored on Rootsweb.
Newspaper Abstracts Great free source of info for many newspaper lookups around the United States. I've found info within pertaining to my ancestors...maybe you will too!
AncestralFindings.com Look up the type and location of records you want searched, email your request to the researchers, and they will look up the info for you! I've used this several times. It's worth a try.
Cinnamon Toast Technology Large surname site search. Links to family websites. As of December, 2005: nearly 152,000 surnames & nearly 9,600 links.
Genealogy.com The best free use of this site is listed above as "Family Tree Maker Search". All other uses of this site are pretty much pay only. Personally, I'd use Ancestry.com first. Their attempt at an online family tree bites too.
Google.com Probably the most useful and easy to use search engines on the web. Can find an endless amount of information. I use this daily. You can either click "Google.com" above to go directly to the site, or you can search within the box below.
Genealogy Helplist R.I.P. This site WAS absolutely wonderful. Perhaps one day it will come back.
